Renew ICBC Online: What you need to know about ICBC’s upcoming changes

Over the past two years, ICBC has made several changes to the way they operate, all with the intention of making things easier for the client and saving consumers money.

The latest change ICBC announced is a shift to an online Autoplan renewal system. Yes, that’s right: Starting next year, when you renew your auto insurance in BC, you may be able to do it without leaving your home!

How will it work?

We probably won’t know exactly what ICBC’s online renewal service will look like until much closer to the March launch date, but basically, you will go to our website before your insurance expires, follow the ICBC Autoplan renewal link, choose from the list (or search for) Megson FitzPatrick Insurance, and review your current auto insurance coverages.

You can also update your address, change the drivers on your policy, and apply for discounts using the online renewal system, just like you can in our office.

Once you submit payment for your renewal (either by credit card, or by monthly payment plan), a copy of the transaction will come to our office so we can review it. You can print out a copy of the insurance documents right then, access a digital copy, or request a copy be mailed to you.

If you use the online Autoplan renewal tool, you will not be able to add or remove coverages from your policy. To do that, call or come in.

And, again, this new online system is only for renewals. To cancel or change a policy, you will need to call or come into an Autoplan office. To set up a new auto insurance policy, purchase a temporary operating permit, or switch a policy from one vehicle to another, you will need to visit an Autoplan office in person.

Who can use it?

Most British Columbians will be able to use the online renewal system, but there are a few exceptions:

  1. If you want to renew your auto insurance policy after it has expired; or
  2. If there are two or more registered owners of a vehicle; or
  3. If the vehicle is leased; or
  4. If you need to make any changes to your coverages

you will need to call us directly, or visit one of our offices in-person.

Vehicles that are part of a fleet will not be able renew their vehicle insurance online.

When will it start?

ICBC’s online Autoplan renewal system will be available as of March 17th, 2022. If your car insurance renews May 1st, 2022 or after, you can use this new system. If your auto insurance expires prior to May 1st, 2022, you will have to renew it in-person at an Autoplan office, or over the phone with your broker.

But we’ll miss you!

We’ll miss seeing you too, but we want you to do whatever is most convenient for you. If that means renewing online, choose Megson FitzPatrick as your advisor when you are completing your renewal. That way, we will stay your broker, and we will review your transactions and contact you if we notice any issues with your policy.

You will still be able to renew your policies in-person at one of our locations, or over the phone, so if you want to, you can connect with one of our expert auto insurance agents, and get the service you are used to.

Is there anything else we should know?

The online Autoplan renewal portal will be available from 5:00am – 1:00am Pacific Time, so there will still be no 3:00am renewal option, sorry.

If you try to renew your auto insurance online and get stuck, you can call us, and we can help you through it, or take over the transaction and process it for you by phone.

We will keep your informed as we learn more about this exciting change from ICBC, but for now, if you have any questions about your Autoplan insurance or want to renew your policy over the phone, give us a call at 1.888.595.5212, or book an appointment to come into one of our locations and have a friendly face help you.
